Topps Future Stars

Sorry about the title. For some reason whenever I think of rookies or minor leaguers I still immediately think of the "Rated Rookie" or "Future Star" insignia splashed across a 1987 Topps baseball card; it's a curse.

Anyway, I just stumbled across what is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive ranking of minor leaguers out there. Mr. Ted Nye ranks the top 599 prospects in MLB by compiling information from such sources as Baseball America, The Sporting News, Baseball Prospectus, and Rotowire - - to name a few. If you care at all about the minor leagues I strongly suggest you check this site out.

For those of you that are lazy, the following 20 Cubs made the consensus top 599:

Rank: 39 - Angel Guzman
Rank: 52 - Felix Pie
Rank: 57 - Justin Jones
Rank: 68 - Andy Sisco
Rank: 73 - Chad Blasko
Rank: 105 - Bobby Brownlie
Rank: 123 - Ryan Harvey
Rank: 171 - Todd Wellemeyer
Rank: 201 - Brendan Harris
Rank: 213 - David Kelton
Rank: 214 - Ricky Nolasco
Rank: 219 - Jae-Kuk Ryu
Rank: 306 - Luke Hagerty
Rank: 319 - Felix Sanchez
Rank: 357 - Renyel Pinto
Rank: 373 - Ronnie Bay
Rank: 374 - Carmen Pignatiello
Rank: 409 - Francis Beltran
Rank: 511 - Billy Petrick
Rank: 585 - Nic Jackson

Perhaps later I will try to give a short synopsis of all 20 of the prospects above, but probably not until the NCAA tourney is over (or my Fighting Illini are eliminated).

For a very good, and tolerably lengthy, analysis of the consensus list check out Redbird Nation.

Rooftop Report links to a compilation of top prospects lists, and lists Cubs in the top 599 prospects in baseball. Angel Guzman, to no surprise, is the top Cub at #37 (and would likely be higher if he had been... [Read More]

Congrats to Illinois, one of the more impressive performances I've seen all year.

Ah well, I've still got Xavier.

Nice work in boiling down where the Cubs prospects are.

What is interesting is, since all we have heard the last two years was how Great the Cub farm system was, and how we have so many Great arms in the system: WE only have How Many Top 100 prospects? 5? And NONE in the top 35?

Maybe the Cub system is DEEP, but it isn't full of Star Power...
