Dusty...losing trusty

Dusty, please stick to McCarthyism and the ability to play in the sun; at least those don't sound as ridiculous as the mess you spewed today when talking about the reasons behind the Cubs lack of walks.

"No. 1, I've let most guys hit 3-0 (in the count). That's one reason," Baker said. "I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can't run, most of the time he's clogging up the bases for somebody who can run."

What?!? Are you kidding me? As Alex Ciepley at Ball Talk states:

"Dusty's comments are simultaneously laugh-out-loud funny, and (because I'm a Cubs fan) rather depressing. How exactly did Dusty come up with this little mantra while spending a decade coaching the best offensive player of his era, who -- oh, by the way, Dusty -- is in large part so successful because of his patient approach at the plate?"

Preach on brother. Here is to hoping Mr. Baker doesn't pontificate on the subject anymore. I think I will just keep getting more and more nervous if he does.

Update: Baseball Musings gets wind of the story and Clark & Addision investigates how the Yanks have fared in walks the last couple of years. To think, all this right after I write about Patterson finally taking some walks.
